Your A/C system relies on refrigerant gas circulating through a sealed loop of pipes, hoses, and a compressor. Mixed in with the gas is a small amount of lubricating oil that keeps the compressor healthy and the rubber seals supple.

When you don’t run the aircon for months — and let’s be honest, who’s running it in July? — that oil stops circulating. The seals dry out, shrink, and develop microscopic cracks. Refrigerant starts leaking, slowly, almost imperceptibly.

By the time November rolls around, your system might be too low on gas to cool anything. Or worse, the compressor — which is the most expensive part — seizes up because it’s been running dry.

Over winter, moisture builds up in the ventilation system. Leaves, dust, and pollen settle into the filter. Add a bit of warmth and you’ve created the perfect breeding ground for mould and bacteria.

A blocked cabin filter doesn’t just smell bad. It restricts airflow through your vents, making your A/C work harder to push cold air into the cabin. Your system runs longer, uses more fuel, and still doesn’t cool properly.

Signs Your A/C Needs Attention

1. It Blows Cool, Not Cold

If the air coming out of the vents is slightly cool but never gets properly cold, even after 10 minutes of driving, your refrigerant level is low. An A/C system in good health should be able to drop cabin temperature noticeably within a few minutes.

2. Intermittent Cooling

One minute it’s cold, the next it’s warm, then cold again. This usually points to a failing compressor clutch — the electromagnetic coupling that engages the compressor when you hit the A/C button. Once these start slipping, they only get worse.

3. Strange Noises When You Turn It On

A loud click when the compressor engages is normal. A grinding noise, a rattle, or a squeal that starts when you hit the A/C button is not. That’s often the compressor bearing or clutch on its way out.

4. Water Inside the Car (Not Outside)

Your A/C produces condensation that drains out under the car. If the drain tube clogs — and they do, especially after a dusty spring — the water backs up and ends up in your passenger footwell. If your carpet’s damp and you haven’t left a window open, check the A/C drain.
